La sua esperienza inglese sembra legata alle vicende dei suoi fratelli Felice, maggiore di due anni e forse trasferitosi a Londra poco prima di Serafino, e Vitale, che aveva sposato Paolina Markò, una delle figlie di Carlo Markò senior. Debuttò alla Crystal Palace Picture Gallery nel 1861, ed espose sette opere alla Royal Academy tra il 1867 e il 1869. Tra queste, una veduta dell’Oxfordshire, senz’altro eseguita durante una visita al fratello Vitale, all’epoca docente d’Italiano al Taylor Institute di Oxford. Telemaco Signorini descrisse Serafino come “uomo assai colto e parlatore esperto di diverse lingue”. A Londra nel 1865, incontrò Antonio Fontanesi, e nel 1870-1871 lavorò a quattro mani con Vito D’Ancona su alcune opere destinate alla vendita; aiutò lo stesso D’Ancona a proporre le sue opere in esposizioni pubbliche. Nel 1873, Serafino lasciò il fratello Felice a Londra e si trasferì a Parigi, dove Signorini lo incontrò nel 1883 e nel 1884. Presentò opere di soggetto inglese anche in Italia: Una veduta dell’Oxfordshire, Inghilterra, (1867); Un parco a Londra (1876 e 1877).
Serafino De Tivoli’s English experience seems to have been determined by his relationship with his brothers Felice, by two years his elder and perhaps already two years resident in London, and Vitale, who had married Paolina Markò, one of the daughters of Carlo Markò senior. He made his debut at the Crystal Palace Picture Gallery in 1861, and exhibited seven works at the Royal Academy between 1867 and 1869. Amongst these was a view of Oxfordshire, no doubt painted during a visit to his brother Vitale, who at the time was lecturer in Italian at the Taylor Institute in Oxford. Telemaco Signorini described Serafino as “a person well educated and with expert knowledge of several languages”. He met up with Antonio Fontanesi in London in 1865, and in 1870-1871 collaborated with Vito D’Ancona on some paintings destined for the market; he assisted D’Ancona in presenting his works in public exhibitions. In 1873, he left his brother Felice in London and moved to Paris, where Signorini met him in 1883 and 1884. He also exhibited paintings of English subjects in Italy: Una veduta dell’Oxfordshire (1867. A view of Oxfordshire); Un parco a Londra (1866 and 1877. A park in London). |
