Nota biografica

Costa’s first contacts with the English date to between 1852 and 1853 in Rome, where he met George Mason and Frederic Leighton, who was to introduce him to many of his clients and friends, including George Frederick Watts and Edward Burne-Jones in 1862. During the winter of 1865, in Rome Costa also met George Howard, his future pupil and patron. Leighton assisted Costa in exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Howard in exhibiting at the Grosvenor Gallery. Between 1862 and 1896, Costa made at least seven trips to Great Britain. A one-man show at the Fine Art Society in 1882 gained him considerable prestige. In 1883-1884, the Etruscan School came into being around the figure of Costa, a group of Italian and English artists, of whom several were guests of his at Bocca d’Arno, where he took up regular summer residence as from 1885. George Howard and the Rev. Stopford Brooke, another important patron of the artist, organised a posthumous exhibition at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in London, in 1904, and in the same year, Olivia Rossetti Agresti published a monograph on Costa, in English.
