Frequenta John Ruskin a Venezia ma, paradossalmente, a Roma nel 1886 espone alcune opere che, almeno dai titoli, sembrano influenzate dalla pittura del suo acerrimo nemico Whistler. Alla prima Biennale di Venezia del 1895, guarda con interesse ad alcuni pittori inglesi, specie Frederic Leighton e Edward Hughes. Il soggiorno inglese del 1882 sembra l’unico compiuto dall’artista.

De Maria kept company with John Ruskin in Venice but, paradoxically, in Rome in 1886, he presented some works which, to judge from their titles, seem instead to have been influenced by his arch-enemy Whistler. At the first Venice Biennale in 1895, De Maria was attracted to  the work of some English artists, like Frederic Leighton and Edward Hughes. His trip to London in 1882 seems to have been the only one he made to Great Britain.
