Fin dal 1857, a Firenze, fu sentimentalmente legato alla pittrice inglese Jane Benham Hay, allieva di John Ruskin e Frederic Leighton. La Hay espose England and Italy alla Royal Academy nel 1859.

As from 1857, Altamura enjoyed an enduring sentimental attachment in Florence to the English artist Jane Benham Hay, pupil of John Ruskin and Frederic Leighton. She exhibited England and Italy at the Royal Academy in 1859.
